Here we go!!! kitchen table makeover!! yay!!
Well, actually it is the sanding I'm nervous about. My opportunities to do these crafty endeavors come around 2x a day during Tac's naps. As you can imagine an electric sander may not be the best activity during nap time. Alas, I decided to paint before sanding and refinishing the top.
The chairs have already been primed, painted, and waxed. I did two white chairs and two gray/blue chairs.
This table and chair set is a little on the country side and I need it to be a little less county craftman if its going to get along with my other craigslist pieces. Yes, our entire condo is outfitted with craigslist finds. I did look at all the thrift places and guess what!!!??? Well, I'll tell you: there wasn't a single "deal" to be found...at least not in Pasadena. We are talking about bedroom sets in the $800 dollar range. I was thinking more like $10.
Craigslist was the answer and as a bonus I met so many nice folks who were moving and selling their stuff. I found this set for $70.
I've decided to paint the base and trim of the top white and to sand and refinish the Tiptop. I hope to re-stain the table top with a richer, deeper walnut hue.
Ill be sharing pictures of the process.
Here is the before shot:
Here is a shot of the primer step: shhhhh! I didn't sand at all-- no regrets!
Two (and a half) coats of Benjamin Moore in eggshell later and I'm one step from waxing!
So what did I use? Well I did what centsationalgirl.com told me to do! I hand-sanded every piece. I primed every piece. (Spray can primer and painting primer together works well.) Then I painted about 3 coats of paint on every piece. The red stools I spray painted with a high-gloss red can. I needed just a bit more than one can for both.
Green girl dresser: I mixed two greens to make this color. So listen folks save yourself some money...when you are mixing colors buy two sample canisters. You do not need a gallon of paint for furniture projects!
In progress: wooden round kitchen table and four chairs. I shall post chairs. The table top must be sanded and its taken me a while to decide how much to leave stained vs. white.
Wood refinishing treatment 101:
Restore-A-Finish will blow your mind. This product is amazing. Wax pencil scratch filler- of you, I am not convinced. Directions: apply restore-a-finish directly to your piece in the stain color you prefer using steel wool in the direction of the wood grain. If you are nervous try a small area first. (note: if your surface is seriously bunk, you make need to sand it down and try a true stain chemical formula followed by minwax.) I would suggest trying restore-a-finish first because it is so amazing, quick, and easy. If you are unconvinced then get your sander out and get busy!
Ok, you tried restore-a-finish you followed the directions on the back (you worked in a well ventilated place bc that stuff be stinky) now, rub it down with some feed-n-wax. I applied the FNW with an old rag. Step back and try to smile a grin that is as silky shiny as your refinished furniture. Ahh- feels so good!
